I really hope this is true

Obama Declines Daughters' Hannah Montana Invite

I know Barack and Michelle have better sense than to do this.  The last thing that those girls need is to be TV guest stars, even if it is on a harmless tween show.  They are already under a microscope during a time when they are not only moving to a new town and school, but into the White House for God’s sake.  Get them the hypoallergenic puppy and keep them out of the spotlight.  Oh, and shut-up Billy Ray Cyrus.  Did the whole Vanity Fair thing teach you nothing? Leave those girls be.

Travel tribulations

So, I’m finally getting around to posting again. I’m back from Orlando, where the conference was fine and I got to visit my friend Juanita, who is now a resident of the God-forsaken place. I also met her fiancĂ©e, who I guess will also need an internet alias, and their highly active dog. And we went to Sea World, where I fed a sea lion and touched a sting ray, so that was cool.

I rode down to Orlando with work people, but stayed an extra couple of days, so I had to pick up a rental car at the Orlando airport, which took forever. (Advice: avoid renting a car at the Orlando Airport.  Huge lines full of vacationing families from throughout North America and Europe.) On the plus side, my trip to the airport did give me the opportunity to walk on a moving sidewalk. I do love the moving sidewalks. They are by far the best thing in any airport. I feel so speedy and important when I’m on one, effortlessly bypassing those walking-on-the-regular-ground losers. I think there should be moving sidewalks out in the world, taking people from their car to the mall or office or movie theatre and back again. I also have this desire to see those skyride aerial tram things you ride on at amusement parks (like the ones at Disney and Busch Gardens) used as a form of around-town public transportation. Think about it. It’s like a cable car, but in the sky. You get a relaxing journey with a lovely view. I confess this idea came to me in a dream, in which Tallahassee had such a system. I walked out to my corner, got into the gondola and was whisked across town to FSU. But, I digress.

Anyway, I finally got my rental car, and as usual it was kind of a pain in the ass. It’s nice to get to try out a different car, but there’s always so much hassle. For example, I hate coming out of a hotel or restaurant or whatever and not immediately recalling what my car looks like. I spent 10 minutes wandering around a mall parking lot looking for my car, because while I could remember that it way gray, I’m not routinely familiar with the lines and body shape of the Mitsubishi Galant. I kept pushing the button on the key to try and make the horn beep to let me know it’s location. I thought I was honing in on it, until I realized that this elderly couple was doing the same thing and I had been following their horn.

I also hate how they don’t put the manual for the car in the glove box anymore. I guess people stole them? Way to ruin it for the rest of us, sticky fingers. Anyway, the manual has helpful information on how to do all the things I always have to spend a lot of time figuring out, like how to turn on the headlights or operate the cruise control. Invariably, I never try to determine how the windshield wipers work until it starts raining, then I find myself trying not to wreck while attempting to decipher the words on that little stick on the steering column. And my personal car doesn’t have those headlights that go on and off automatically, so I don't know how to determine if the rental car lights have come on, nor do I believe they will turn themselves off.

A while back had one of those HHRs (the state makes you rent the compact, but AVIS is often out of them, so they just upgrade you to whatever’s around. The best was when I got a Prius.) Anyway, I was going to Orlando, as usual, and I didn’t need to roll down the window until I was approaching one of O-town’s many charming tollbooths. It was only then that I realized that I had no idea how to open the window. There was no button or knob or crank or anything on the door. I finally had to open the door at the booth to pay the toll, where the helpful tollbooth worker told me, “the window control is in the middle by the gear shift.” Apparently, it was not his first time seeing people with this problem. Didn’t make me look like less of an idiot, however. Ditto the time that I pulled up to the gas pump and had to spend 5 minutes trying to figure out how to open the little door over the gas tank. And I never remember to look beforehand at which side of the car the tank is on, so I’m always pulling up to the wrong pump.

Ok, enough bitching for now. But for real, someone needs to get cracking on that skyride transport system, stat.  That is totally the way forward.

Election thoughts

So, It's day 2 with President-Elect Obama (President Obama has such a nice ring to it) and I'm just getting around to talking about it because I'm at a conference in Orlando. I had to leave to come down here the morning after there election, and have been busy conferencing until now.

But, I now have a moment to breathe before dinner, so I thought I would reflect a bit. To begin with, I am so happy and still in a bit of disbelief. I have to say that despite the fact he was leading in the polls and possessed an impressive grassroots organization and even though he seemed to have truly captured the imagination of the public, I spent all election day thinking it could still all go horribly wrong at the last minute. I mean, it's not like that is unprecedented, and lord knows I've been burned in the past. And early on CNN was killing me with those returns and those charts with all the crazy voter categories and that map with vote totals going all the way down to the county level. I really liked the map once things started to turn, but the early returns were worrying me. But, the forces of good triumphed in the end, and that's all the matters.

Here's some other stuff:

  • Someone on CNN mentioned this interesting fact: the candidate with the better military record hasn’t won in the last 5 elections: Bush over Kerry and Gore, Clinton over Dole and Bush the elder.
  • Also on the CNN front. I'm kinda torn on the holograms. They were freaky, but kind of grew on me. I mean, are holograms really that different than talking heads on a TV screen? Also, it's led to so many "help me (Barack Obama, will.i.am, etc.), you're my only hope" jokes. Also, I rather enjoyed Wolf and Anderson saying "now joining us live via hologram..."
  • I can’t believe the anti-gay marriage amendment passed (not only in FL but in CA too). I just really don’t get this issue. How does a gay marriage diminish a straight one? Gay marriage does not impinge on the rights of straight couples or take anything away from their relationships. And if it’s an issue of faith, I don’t get why people think that the tenants of their particular faith should be put in the constitution. I mean, that’s like a bunch of Christians saying were down with Jesus, but the Jews aren't, so let's put "Jesus is the son of God" in the constitution, you know, just in case the Jews want to name another Messiah sometime. To me, this issue is no different from the laws that used to prevent blacks and whites from marrying. How do people not see that? Being that I am neither married nor gay, the issue doesn't affect me directly, other than we just put something in the constitution that takes rights away from a specific minority group. That's just disturbing...
  • I also can't believe that Ted Stevens got re-elected immediately after getting convicted. I mean, thanks to Palin, we already knew that Alaska was messed up, but good lord people...
Oh also, thank God this election is over. Two years of campaigning, ya'll.

That's enough for now. Yay Obama!

Go Vote!

Enough Said.

Still getting out the vote

I was happy to see this.  I hope it gets the youth vote out for Barack down there among the Republicans.

I'm not much of a Diddy fan (quit changing your name already), but I love Russell Simmons, and if you have the 2 of them plus Jay-Z...that's quite the hip hop triumvirate.  Not to mention, those are some extremely rich dudes.

I really really hope we become a blue state this year.  Although, we have to make it through this to get there.

Joe the Biden

Today I attended the the Joe Biden Rally over at FSU, where I got to stand in the front row and shake his hand, which was pretty cool. He seems like a nice man, and I look forward to his being our VP. There were a bunch of McCain protesters outside the rally, waving signs and generally trying to disrupt things. They had some sort of siren that they kept setting off during Biden's speech, but you really couldn't hear it, so their efforts were for nothing. They were also screaming and playing with their siren during the part of the speech where Biden was talking about reaching across the aisle and healing partisan differences, and working together for the good of the country, so nice one, McCain-ites.

Here's another tangentially related thing that happened yesterday. I went to get a pedicure with my friend Lucy (Black Onyx was my selected toenail color, in case you were curious). Afterward, we were standing outside the Tallahassee Mall by her car. She and her husband, Ricky, had been canvassing for Obama that morning. One of the houses they passed by had a McCain/Palin sign in the yard, but it also had a pile of 4 or 5 Obama signs that the resident had obviously snatched out of people's yards. Lucy and Ricky took the signs for redistribution (which I think works as some sort of metaphor for the whole "Obama wants to redistribute your wealth" thing that McCain is always on about with Joe the Plumber these days, but I can't quite work it out at the moment) Anyway, she had the signs in her trunk, and so I walked over to her car to get one. We were standing there chatting and I was holding the sign, when out of nowhere, this 30-ish African-American dude walks up to me and says "I just want to tell you that I'm a McCain supporter, and you might as well throw those signs away." Very odd...

Why politics makes me hate everyone #5

Elizabeth Dole:

Personally, I don't think a person's religion, or lack thereof, should be an issue in an election, but some people are fanatical about it and this panders to the worst in them.  This is just the epitome of a smear ad.  Here is on YouTube.

The sleeziest bit is that that last line is not her voice.

Also not a fan of Robin Hayes, also mentioned in the above article.
Hayes got some unwanted attention earlier this month when — warming up the crowd at a rally for John McCain — he said liberals "hate real Americans that work and accomplish and achieve and believe in God."  He was speaking at a McCain rally and announed that "liberals 'hate real Americans that work and accomplish and achieve and believe in God."
  Really nice, North Carolina.

29 October 2008

So, I went mountain biking after work yesterday out at Lake Overstreet trails. I haven't been in a while, so I only did the short multi-use loop and part of the mountain bike trail. I'm not what you would call an experienced mountain biker. Neither would you use words like skilled or good or proficient. Fairly unlikely to actually crash? That's more in the ballpark.

I tend to ride on trails like those at Lake Overstreet that are wide and not that challenging. I mean they are not challenging in terms of having like jumps and stuff, because that hill coming up from the bottom loop to the top is plenty challenging for me. That shit is steep, ya'll. Anyway, “technical trails” is I believe the cool mountain biker term for the ones with all the roots and jumps and tight turns and crazy steep drops.

Here's the thing about those trails. I'm not opposed to them on principal. It’s just that I might kill myself, were I to attempt to ride them. I lack the requisite skills. And the problem is that I don't know how you actually get those skills. First off , do you really improve at riding a bike? I mean, it's riding a bike. People say, "it's like riding a bike" for a reason. It’s supposed to be simple, right?

I know that the correct answer on how to get better is to practice, but I’m not sure how that would work in this case. It's like skateboarding. I never understood how people get good enough to do all those flips and ollies and fakie nosegrinds or whatever the kids are calling it these days. Again, I know, practice. You do the tricks over and over again and fall and screw up until you finally don't fall and screw up anymore. I don't think that approach is going to work for my problem, though. I mean, do you just ride down the hill and fly over the handlebars or a crash into a tree until that doesn't happen anymore? Sounds painful. And dangerous. And, I’m too old for that shit.

I’ve checked out some of the other trails around town. A lot of them are mixed use and have some easy parts and some technical parts. That’s fine, I just have to go slow or dismount when I get to something I can’t handle. Which is fine, if no one is around. But often there are other people there who actually know what they are doing and seem annoyed by my slow, unsteady ass. I’m sure that’s just me projecting and that they are perfectly nice, but I am in their way and I feel bad slowing them up.

I would like to get better. It's not like I'm an adrenaline junkie or anything, but I do enjoy going fast. I love roller coasters and the spinny throw-up rides at the amusement park. It's just that on a bike I feel completely out of control. Probably due me being in charge as opposed to the safety of being on a track like a roller coaster.

I think what I need is some sort of class involving safety gear and a professional. Like when little kids take gymnastics class. They start with low-to-the-ground equipment, lots of padding, and spotters to catch them when they fall. I need that, but a mountain bike version for unskilled 30- and 40- somethings.

Go Barack

I know this has been out for a while, but I just ran across it again and I still found it surprisingly moving.  Even despite the presence of Scarlett Johansson, who pegs my irrational hatred meter right up to 11.

Oh, and there's another one:

This one, on the other hand…I’m not sure how I feel about it.

The concept is amusing, there’s just something about the execution that seems off.  But hey, if it gets people on board for Barack, then more power to you, Opie.

The first rule of musicals is...

So, it’s not like I’m completely against the whole movies turned into musicals thing, but there is a time and place for that sort of thing. Some movies naturally lend themselves to the new format. I mean, The Producers (1968, 2005) and Hairspray (1988, 2007) were practically musicals already. The stage productions may have had a few more singing and dancing numbers added, but the stories themselves were already pretty much centered around some sort of musical entity (Hitler musical, teen dance show), so the remake makes some kind of sense. But Fight Club: The Musical? That’s a stretch.

And then I found this list.

So, what’s the deal? Are there really no new ideas for musicals? This seems like a weird phenomenon. I mean, making a musical into a movie makes some sense, you’re basically just filming an existing work (plus you have more freedom as to locations, costume changes, special effects, etc.) But taking a movie and replacing the dialog with a bunch of songs and boxing it in on a stage seems like such an odd idea. Also, I keep trying to imagine the Fight Club Musical, and I just can't quite get there...

24 October 2008

Hey Hey Tampa Bay...Fall Classic style

So, I'm rooting for Tampa Bay to win the World Series.  I would like to stress that this does not make me a "bandwagon" fan.  People get so het up about that. They're all "I liked the Rays from the start.  Now all these Johnny-come-latelys are trying to act like they're Rays fans, but where were they when the team had 10 straight losing seasons?!  I mean…it's just!…and they think they can just come in and…ahhh!…"  And then it just deteriorates into incoherent ranting and frothing at the mouth.

Calm down people.  I'm not saying that I am suddenly a Rays fan.  I'm saying that in the current sporting contest, in which neither of "my teams" is participating (Braves or Orioles, FYI), and therefore a contest in which I would otherwise have no interest, I have chosen, of the 2 teams presented to me, to root for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays*.  Deal with it.

The choice was a no-brainer, really, for a number of reasons.  1. I am a Florida girl, so I gotta represent.  2. The Rays have a good story with the whole worst-to-first arc.  3. Phillies fans kind of seem like assholes.

I find the whole bandwagon situation interesting.  Even though I am rooting for the Rays, I don't consider myself a "Rays fan".  As stated above, in the World Series, there are only 2 teams to choose from, so I picked.  Rooting for a team in a given contest doesn't make you a fan.  Fans have hats, and t-shirts, and the occasional bumper sticker or large foam finger.  The teams of which I am a fan (minus the finger, those are wack) include, the aforementioned Braves, The Buccaneers (i.e. the other Tampa Bay team), FSU as my alma mater (although, don't get me started on the madness of college football fans), ditto for those Leon Lions (the alma mater part, not the madness), and Arsenal, if you want to branch  across the pond and into the Premiership

The rest of my sports affiliations break down along these lines. I have a second tier of teams that I like a lot (usually in the other league from the main team, just to give me a rooting interest.) These days those would be the Orioles, the Colts, Manchester United.  I also have teams that I have a certain affection for because someone I like likes them, like University of Kentucky (Hi Rakes) or the Bolton Wanderers (The Byrons), or because they are scrappy underdogs (I'm looking at you, Vanderbilt).

Everybody else falls into 3 categories: 1. teams I will generally root for to win  2. teams I wish failure and destruction upon  and 3. teams I have no strong feelings about.  So if say, anyone, is playing the Yankees…go anyone! Tottenham Hotspur?  I generally like 'em, so good luck boys. University of Miami?  Go whoever is playing them, but be careful because they might shoot you. Chiefs playing the Texans?  Umm, whatever, makes no difference to me.   You'll note none of my examples include the NBA or NHL.  Can't be bothered these days.  Again, I have some teams I intrinsically like more than others (for absolutely no apparent reason) and come play-off time, I'll pick someone to root for, but I really don't care one way or the other.  Oh, and when I say "pick someone to root for" I mean that in my head, I will say of one of the teams, "gee I hope they win",  but that doesn't mean I'm going to watch the game.  It's more like if I happen to run across the score the next day and the team I selected is victorious, I can say "well, isn't that nice".

And…that's way too much time and effort put into my feelings about sports.

*One final thing, I wish the Rays were still the Devil Rays.  They are in my heart.  First off, I didn’t realized that when they chaged the name, they changed the meaning of the word ray from this:

To this:

Is that what that little twinkle in the “R” is supposed to be?  I also don’t approve of this:
In November 2007, majority owner Stuart Sternberg decided to make drastic changes and renamed his team from the "Tampa Bay Devil Rays" to the "Tampa Bay Rays", which he described as "A beacon that radiates throughout Tampa Bay and across the entire state of Florida."

Um…no.

Anyway, I dislike the name change.  Partly because Devil Rays is a better name, but mostly because the fundamentalists are now going to be able to cite the removal of the word "devil" from the name and the team's subsequent improvement as some sort of triumph of Jesus over evil.

Don't Americans feel that way all the time?

When I first saw this, I thought it was an Onion headline, but it's from CNN.

Poll finds Americans angry, worried
A new national poll suggests that only a quarter of Americans think things are going well in the country today, while the rest of those questioned are angry, scared and stressed out.

And, for no apparent reason, (other than it makes me laugh out loud, repeatedly, every single damn time I read it) I include this link to an actual Onion story...one of my favorites:

London, meet Paris

Dear London,
You know my feelings about you. You are one of my top 3 favorite cities in the world. I wish only good things for you. But, there comes a time when you have to look out for number one. And I'm afraid, London, we have reached one of those times.
She's gotta live somewhere, and given the choice, I'd really prefer it not be here. In fact, maybe we can get her to take some of her friends with her. So, sorry London. If I were you, I'd get busy promoting the hell out of Australia. Sing the praises of Italy. Talk up Siberia. I'm sure you can get her to move along.

Love, Zil

P.S. Seriously, do a google image search for Paris Hilton, it's like soft-core central in there...

Hooray for Colin Powell

Ok, not only is it awesome that Colin Powell endorsed Barack Obama, it's extra awesome that he did it in such an eloquent, reasoned, and thoughtful manner.  I especially liked the parts about Palin's lack of qualification to be president, how being a Muslim doesn’t make you automatically evil, and his disappointment in the way the Republican party has moved so far to the right.  All excellent points, Mr. Powell.  See for yourself:

Addendum

So, Wahlberg on SNL…Funny in theory, I guess, but he still came off as kind of a tool.  I also missed this whole thing on Kimmel, where he said he wanted to punch Samberg in the face (I’m paraphrasing, add a lot more “fucks” and you get the gist.)

So now the questions is, was the whole thing a set up for him to appear on SNL to promote Max Payne?  If so, that’s really round-about marketing.  Also, he still had to look like a dick all week leading up to the show.

I think it started out real.  His original comment was legit, he was actually pissed at the sketch. Then, either he or his handlers decided he was looking like a bad sport and they needed to spin it, so he went on the show.  Also, I've spent way too much time thinking about Mark Wahlberg recently...

13 October 2008

"Say hi to your mother for me"

So apparently Mark "don't call me Marky-Mark" Wahlberg didn't care for the sketch about him on Saturday Night Live.

Personally, I found it hilarious. I actually laughed out loud. Like, I just watched the clip again before I wrote this, and I laughed out loud again. Several times. I thought Andy Samberg was dead on, which was impressive, because I don't really think of Wahlberg as having any obvious, easily-imitated mannerisms.

It just confirms my theroy that Wahlberg has no sense of humor.

Back up off of me...

So, I take this Pilates class twice a week at lunchtime, and I try to get there early so that I can be sure to get my chosen spot (which is in the back corner, the better to spare my classmates from having to watch my spastic contortions). Anyway, there’s this woman who always comes in right before class starts, and who insists on wedging her mat into a too-small and too-close-to-others space, just so she won’t have to be in the front. In fact, it has gotten to the point that I place my mat slightly farther away from the wall than I normally would, so that when this woman inevitably puts her mat too close to mine, I have some space to move away from her. I do not approve of people with no respect for personal space. Also, if you show up late to class, you have to be in the front. It’s a rule as old as grade school people…

Fiesty old movie broads

Apparently, yesterday was the day for the fiesty old movie broads to get all het up about stuff.  First we have this item, in which Brigitte Bardot goes off on Sarah Palin.  Among other things, she remarks on her tendency toward "making statements that are disconcertingly stupid".

Then there was Lauren Bacall (love her) taking on Tom Cruise.  Best quote "Tom Cruise is a maniac. I can't understand the way he conducts his life."  Word.  That Scientology bastard needs to shut right up.

Back again...now in iMac format

So I wandered off for a while. Partly because I am sporadically lazy, but mostly because I got a new computer and I had to switch everything over and whatnot. But, my new computer is so very nice. Giant screen and all filled with Macintoshy goodness. I guess Justin Long finally wore me down. Anyway, now that everything is more or less set up, I'll start with the blogging once more. Although, at the moment I really have nothing to say. So, I will just leave you with these lovely photos of scenes I encountered on successive days while out and about.

Why politics makes me hate everyone #1

Lipstick on a pig

It's a non-issue people.  Shut-up McCain campaign...

I'm skeptical about their usage of the term...

Ok, so this story was on the CNN page that my work computer defaults to:
Scientists cheer atom smasher success
Scientists applauded as one of the most ambitious experiments ever conceived began today. The Large Hadron Collider -- designed to simulate conditions of the Big Bang -- was switched on this morning. Skeptics claim the experiment could create a black hole capable of swallowing the Earth.
That last sentence, while alarming, seems wrong. I don't think "skeptics" is the right term. It's like the difference between "skeptics think ghosts aren't real" and "skeptics think looking for ghosts will get them all angered-up and cause them to cross back over into the earthly realm and kill you while you sleep" See the distinction?

In the atom smasher instance, skeptics would be people who just don't think the thing will work or who don't believe the particle they are trying to find is real. Thinking that the thing could possibly destroy the earth is something else entirely. They need a term other than skeptic, although now that I think about it, I'm not sure what it would be.

And also, could someone look into making sure that black hole thing doesn't happen? That would be great.

band names from life

Potential band name: Aspirational Whores

Origin: A tweet from this guy about the use of the line "I feel just like Pretty Woman, only, you know, not a whore" (from the new 90210, I believe) and how it is out of date..."surely today's kids have different aspirational whores?"

Snowman, you got your ears on?

Aww…Jerry Reed died. Weird, cause amongst my recent random iTunes purchases was East Bound and Down.

I always liked him. Of course I knew him from Smokey and the Bandit, but he seemed to pop up in lots of other random places too. I used to love the show Alice when I was a kid (I have no explanation…kids like weird stuff) and he was a guest star on that. And he was also on and episode of Scooby-Doo, where he sang that Pretty Mary Sunlight song. (It was The New Scooby-Doo Movies, actually, the one with the guest stars playing themselves. I digress here, but I love the one with the Harlem Globtrotters) That was enough to win me over. Plus, I always thought he was kinda hot.

And speaking of dead 70's icons, I watched The Wiz the other day (again, I have no explanation for my actions) and I found myself intrigued by Richard Pryor.

So, I've seen the film before, but not for a really long time. It was on one of those movie channels I get free with my digital cable…maybe because of Michael Jackson's birthday? I don't know.

Anyway, it was on, for some reason, and I watched it, for some reason. Actually, I tivo-ed it and fast-forwarded through quite a bit. I'm not a fan of Diana Ross (I find divas troubling) and a lot of the songs are boring, as are stretches of the film. I do love Nipsey Russell though. But the thing that stuck me most was the part with Richard Pryor at the end, when they find out that he's the Wiz and that he's just a guy and doesn't really have any powers. That is really Pryor's only scene in the movie, but his performance is not bad. When he's ranting about losing the race for dog catcher and all that, it's a bit much, but at the end when he's asking for Dorothy to help him, he plays it so sad and broken and lonely that it's quite moving.

And now, for your enjoyment, I offer you a random Nipsey Russell poem I discovered while looking up stuff about The Wiz . In honor of the homestretch of campaign madness:

The opposite of pro is con
That fact is clearly seen
If progress means move forward
Then what does Congress mean?

Ambassador? Really?

So I had to reserve a room at a hotel today for a work conference. I went online and and found a room and I proceeded to fill out the required info on the reservation form. They of course, asked for first name and last name, but there was also a box in front of those two for title. This is where I would usually have selected Ms. I'm a big believer in the usage of Ms. Men don't announce their marital status in their title, why should the ladies have to? I even looked Ms. up in Garner's, just out of curiosity, and it was listed under the section on sexism. He agrees with me. See:

Anyway, I would have chosen Ms., but weirdly that option was not available on the provided drop-down menu. Doesn't that seem odd in this day and age. I mean, everyone offers Ms. as an option, don't they?

I would chalk it up to the form trying to save space or limit options or whatever, but the thing is that the drop-down list included like every other possible title in the world.

Here is the list from which I could choose : Mr., Mrs., Miss, M/M, Dr., Prof., Judge, Amb., Sen., Rep., Col., Maj., Gen., Rev. or None.

I mean, come on...Ambassador, Senator, and Representative made the list? And it's so arbitrary. Colonial, Major, and General, but no love for the Sgt. or Lt.? And Reverend, but not Father or Rabbi or Imam? What about that M/M option, which I assume stands for "Mr. and/or Mrs."? That makes absolutely no sense, since there is only space for one person's name on the form. So weird. Anyway, I was forced to select none. Stupid conference hotel.

Vacation

Here's some photos from my recent trip to Key West. I went with my dear friend Lady Byron and almost 5-year-old BiSH (poor daddy had to stay in the UK to bring home the bacon...and tomatoes and mushrooms and black pudding...all that freaky English breakfast stuff). He was greatly missed, but we persevered.

We were there the week before Tropical Storm Fay came along and required everyone to evacuate...that would have SUCKED. And it was good that I was back in Tally to deal with the biblical-style flooding.

We took the ferry over from Ft. Myers, which definitely seems like the way to go. Otherwise, you're looking at quite a drive. I would not, however, recommend coming home on a Sunday evening like we did. It's totally worth extending your trip a day to avoid a Sunday return. If not, you face a boat full of drunken weekend/daytrippers (and the boat has a full bar, so the party continues.) It's not pretty. Almost, but not quite, as bad as the time I took the ferry from Holyhead to Dublin, on which the party of young men next to me had had the foresight to bring a case of Carling tallboys on board to see them through the crossing.

Anyway, despite being a lifelong Florida girl, I had never actually been to the Keys. In my defense, the Keys are really far away from Tallahassee, over 600 miles. If you drove north instead of south, you would make it through Georgia, Tennessee, and most of Kentucky in the same number of miles. I know you can fly there in no time, but it seems like if you are getting on a plane already, there are so many other, farther away places to see...

Anyway, the trip was fun. We saw all the sights (Hemingway's house, Truman's house, Duval Street, the Southernmost point, etc), snorkeled and swam, bought a lot of stuff, ate well, and enjoyed many a frozen drink.
